Noob event monitoring question here and seeking advice. I have the opportunity to work on Salesforce event monitoring, but I’m wondering where to start and what to analyze. There’s a lot to this, so I’m trying to piece together the “sum of the event parts” to build a good monitoring practice.

Our DataDog has been set up to monitor Salesforce

and I also can query Event Logs via SOQL. So now I’m wondering what’s next first steps?

How did you start this journey?

Any recommendations on best first steps and practices are greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

There are many ways to start, but I’d recommend beginning the same way you would when implementing any feature: with the requirements. In this example, I’d made a list of use cases/scenarios (eg, alert when a user logs in from an unusual location, alert when a single user exports n number of reports within a specified timeframe, alert when page load times are exceeding n number of seconds). Once you define your initial list, you can solution exactly how to implement them and then plan your work accordingly.

Having the list of actual use cases not only allows you to best prioritize and plan your work, it also tells a more compelling story of value to your business stakeholders.
