Pros/Cons of EDA vs. Education Cloud product

Hello everyone! I'm new to Salesforce and currently exploring the Sales + Service Cloud CRM product through the free Power of Us program. Our university has chosen Salesforce to create a shared CRM for our enrollment + marketing teams to collaborate & create sophisticated connections between our marketing automation work and recruiting operation, connections which are currently nonexistent.

I've read the complete documentation for Education Data Architecture and feel like I understand it pretty thoroughly, but I'm curious as to the community's perspective on the suitability of EDA compared to the Education Cloud product: what are the biggest differences and the reasons why an institution might want one over the other?

As I currently understand it, it seems that EDA, as a free package, is a great option for institutions that aren't afraid to do their own implementation and customization of Salesforce to support their business processes, while Education Cloud comes with much more pre-built functionality to cover more areas of the higher education business with less customization required. Would you all say that's a fair assessment?

We obviously want to choose a path that is going to set us up for long term success, and want to know whether we're likely to regret going the DIY route with EDA vs regretting paying for a lot of functionality we don't need with Education Cloud (potentially). As we are also planning to implement Marketing Cloud Account Engagement (formerly Pardot), our account executive has also warned us that we need to be very thoughtful about which route we go (sticking with the Power of Us program + EDA vs. going full in on Education Cloud) because they say you can't migrate MCAE implementations to a different org later on.
