I've read some of the threads about the anonymous household creation when you merge contacts, but I'm not sure my issue is the same and I'm a little puzzled. I just discovered about 140 different Anyonmous Households that usually name a primary contact. When I click the primary contact, they are in a regular household as they should be. They don't have any organization affiliations. So where is this "anonymous" household living? I can tell by the contact names, that these are contacts that I have merged with the NPSP contact merge tool. I've read that maybe I should have been merging accounts before I merge contacts but I have never seen a merge accounts tool.

If you're getting Anonymous Households after a merge, that's to be expected as NPSP doesn't delete those accounts. We have no way of knowing what other data you might have on the account. If you're sure it's empty, you can just delete them.
