I think there's a cheap license type that many nonprofits are missing out on and is ideally suited for our needs, the Platform License, so I've written a blog about it. Next time you're discussing license costs with your Account Executive make sure you ask for the pricing on this one as it may make you think/blink again! As a bonus, it also makes it far more affordable to extend Salesforce into new areas of your organisation.
