Contacts now showing up in search

When creating contacts I am finding that how you create them changes where they will show up, however there are many of our contacts that have already been created that are not showing up when I am under the contacts and search in the contacts list. To find them I have to search using the main search bar for salesforce and when looking at them they appear to be coded the same as other contacts. are there any tricks to resolving this?

    The issue isn’t that there are duplicates it’s that certain contacts are not showing up when doing a list search and therefore aren’t connected to organizations or other files. Do you know how to change how contacts are viewed?
