Can you provide more insight into your marketing sequence? Typically with Salesforce, Marketers use the Campaign object in Salesforce, in which they can create one or more campaigns and then add leads and contacts to track engagement on that campaign. You can use this functionality within Salesforce Essentials
Workflow rules or more meant for more automated notifications rather than automated marketing communication. Additionally, workflow rules are supported in Salesforce Essentials, but Process Builder is available which offers similar functionality.
