How to make records private in a public/read/write org?

I am an admin for an Org that is public/read/write on most objects.  We do not use Contacts (we only  use business accounts) ... but we do use Leads and Referrals.  Our "Contacts" are set up as Accounts with  a unique record type.

 

Our new Sales Director has tasked me with a way to make COI's (Center of Influence) private.  Most of our current COI"s are entered as Accounts....which is public/read/write.

 

Any ideas on how I can make COI's private?  I am open to creating a new object - it that's what I need to solve this problem.

    Are COIs the unique record type on Accounts that you mentioned?

     

    If so, you'll need to set the OWD for Accounts to private, and then create a sharing rule to share all other Accounts where the Record Type != COI.
