My question is about entry sources in Journey Builder. I am trying to use a data extension with a filter applied within Journey Builder, but the data does not seem to be filtering properly when I test the email.

I don’t know what the issue might be, but the structure/organization of my data is also quite complex and confusing. I have linked attributes from multiple data extensions to my sendable data extension, and am using that information to filter. Is that why it’s not working?

I’m also confused about contact data vs. journey data. I understand one is updated and one of them never is (a snapshot of data it said), but which is used during entry source evaluation, and which one is used during split decisions? When does data get updated in marketing cloud, and if I have marketing cloud connect enabled, how does Sales Cloud get updated? Do I have to setup an automation with a data export?

    Hi Trenton

Please note that for applying filters across multiple DEs in a journey, you need to link them appropriately in the Attribute Groups in Contact Builder. The primary DE should be linked to the Contact model - and related DEs mapped to the primary DE with proper cardinality and key. For e.g. you can have CustomerDE as the main DE mapped on Contact key - whereas OrderDetails as another DE mapped to the CustomerDE. So if you want to filter contacts with a specific order criteria, you can then select this in the journey filter criteria.

Please do take a look at the video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0DZz33tkUd8 from 31:15 - 46:37 - I have explained how linkages are done in Contact Builder - and when to use Contact vs Journey data in a journey.

With regards to you last question on Sales Cloud connectivity - please do keep in mind that with MC Connect, data flows in from synched objects in SF CRM to Marketing Cloud - there is no direct synching back to the objects from Marketing Cloud to SF CRM. The only data that gets sent back is Tracking data if the recipients are Contacts / Leads from SF CRM (need to go through Salesforce Data Extensions). Another option is to use the Salesforce Activities in a Journey to create / update SF CRM objects from within a journey. You can also update SF CRM data through programming (AMPscript, SSJS, APIs). Please do check out the video below on the integration of SF CRM with SFMC - and what is possible with this integration.

    Hope this helps.
