When I "save" an HTML email template, the format changes to Rich Text, condensed into one paragraph. Why?

I went to my setting -> email templates -> new template -> Custom (without using Letterhead). I have created a test HTML email template. When I save it, it would look different; Rich Text, condensed into one paragraph.

So I am assuming that you're entering the  HTML Markup  there ? Can you let us know what the HTML Markup is ?
