I'm trying to "built" a formula/criteria that checks if an account has an (at least 1) open opportunity related in order to use this as a trigger for an email alert.
I tried process builder and workflow rules but I don't know how I can make that criteria.

Hi Philipp,
You could probably build this using a Flow. Your flow will need to have an input variable containing the account ID, and will use a Get Records step to query all open opportunities for that account. You only need to get the first record because it doesn't matter if you have 1 or 1000 open opportunities. After the query, check the variable onto which you loaded the opportunity - if it's null, don't do anything. If it isn't null, send the email.
Once the flow is built, you can trigger it automatically using process builder.
