I created a custom field in task page layout called "type" and the picklist options are "email and call". Is there a way to get the "email" option to auotmatically populate when an email comes from outlook into salesforce?

 

I want this so I can track all the emails being sent by our reps.

    Any reason why you are not using the standard Type field for Tasks? I don't have a current installation of SFO to confirm right this second but I am pretty sure if you use the standard field, add your value and mark it as the "Send Email Default" then it will be the option used when you sync an e-mail. Worst case you could write a workflow rule that chooses the value when the e-mail record is created.
