how to catch duplicate email id ?if the email id already exists in database ?

I am using vlookup function in validation rules .so duplication of the records are caught easily ,so some people are again creating the new records and with the same email id .so my question is how to catch the email id ?duplication of email id .as vlook up function is only used for checking record names ?

so what can i do ? please help me ?
