Said Manager no longer wants/needs to see them.
When I select the Chatter Free User EDIT, it does not have a section to change/delete manager....

As you select the license type as part of creating a new user and manager is a default field on the page layout then I can see how it was completed in the first place but is odd than when you edit it isn't on the page.
I presume SFDC thought we wouldn't need to set managers for Chatter Free users... :)
If you view the user in the People/Chatter tabs you can access the manager field via the About tab you can manually amend this.
If you have a lot to change then I'd recommend the Data Loader (or Excel Connector) as you'll be able to make mass edits irrespective of the page layout.
