Universal Timeline Error for custom objects

I have installed the Universal Timeline AppExchnage product in my org. The timeline shows the events for the standard objects, but when i create a time line for a custom object, the events dont load. In the Broswer console, an exception is shown 

 

SyntaxError: Unexpected token < "XmlHttp: Error handling onReadyStateChange"

 

Any workarounds?

    For the installation guide for this app https://appexchange.salesforce.com/servlet/servlet.FileDownload?file=00P3000000P5pYYEAZ) it looks like there is additional configuration required for it to work work with custom objects.  

     

    "Adding the Timeline to other core objects and custom objects is almost as easy as adding it to Account, Contact, Lead, Case and Opportunity page layouts as described above. The one additional step is to create a Visualforce Page that embeds the Timeline component and uses a standard controller for the object type in question."
