Can I add an additional field in salesforce which allows the contact record to have multiple owners? For example, if we have a contact whoworks with different departments.

 

Alternatively, what is best practice for deciding on who should ultimately own a record?

    Records can only be owned by one user.

     

    If your sharing rules don't control who can see this record, then the owner doesn't really matter.
