Why can't I create a new Opportunity Competitor?

I am trying to implement a process of recording contract end dates for companies that are currently signed up to our Competitors. I assume that I would have to add a new Opportunity Competitor. However when I try it keeps coming up with errors (see screenshot). It keeps either saying that the Competitor is not a competitor (has to start with $_ and have competitor as type (which it does) ) or it says that the Account is not a competitor (with the same requirements - $_ and competitor type).

If you can view the setup on your SFDC or you should be able to find the Validation Rule that is giving the error message. If you can find it and copy&paste the VR formula we should be able to figure out why you're getting the error and how to fix it.
