How do I create a "by month" custom field?

I do a lot of dashboards and something that I haven't been able to find is a "month" field to sort by in summary/matrix reports in order to create a dashboard. I want to be able to create charts and have a field that allows for me to group opportunities/accounts by month so that I can have a progressive dashboard. I have only found fields such as by created date, fiscal quarter, etc. which works, but is inconsitant for me. 

 

Is there a way to specifically make month-to-month reports/ dashboards or is there a way to create a custom field for it. Thanks so much!

    It's not a "Field" it's a Report Setting, just edit the Report in the Report Builder select the Date Field colum in your report  and group it as you want it to be displayed ->
