I have a new requirement for a sub-set of users. They want to have access to accounts they own (read write), visibility to the associated Parent Account, and visibility to all of the Children accounts within that hieararchy, regardless of ownership. Currently our Account settings are private. Would the Account Teams, or sharing rules be the route for me to take to grant access? If I give a user access to the parent account, will that access level trickle down to the child account records? Thanks! -Laura

I don't think this is possible out of the box because Parent Account can't be used in a Criteria Based sharing rule. It might be possible to create a custom field that is updated via a Trigger and use that in a Filter Based Criteria, but that is going way outside the box.
You may have to bite the bullet and create a Group and set up a Sharing Rule that allows them greater access.
