Hi Kathryn,
The NPSP is a series of packages available from the AppExchange, one of which is just Affiliations and the triggers that automatically create affiliations for your contacts upon creation / account changes.
We use this in our org and other clients have used this despite having nothing to do with being a nonprofit. Try it out in your sandbox to see if you like it!
