I was wondering if there is a way to restrict a user's ability to change the default value associated with a stage for an opportunity? For example, when a user selects the stage prospecting for an opportunity we have it set so that the stage for the opportunity changes to best case. Is there a way to set it in Salesforce so the user cannot change the forecast category to another value like pipeline because we have the forecast category set to best case for this stage? I was thinking that there might be a way to prevent the user from doing so with a validation rule, but I am not sure if this would work.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Thanks for your quick, informative, and helpful response Matt! I am currently using the Non-Profit Editon of Salesforce (will be moving to the Non-Profit Starter Pack), will a validation rule like this prevent opportuntity roll-ups and/or have any negative impacts on forecasting?
