Presently, we store all documents related to an opportunity in a directory on our internal network share drive - N:\SUNY Delhi - Barnes and Noble Bookstore - Delhi, NY

We would like to put a link on an opportunity that would allow a user to quickly access that folder to view documents stored there (i.e. ERP Sales Order, ERP Purchase order)

We created a URL field and copy/pasted the link above and that did not work.  We added our server name/path and that also did not work.

\\creati01dc01\NAV Projects\SUNY Delhi - Barnes and Noble Bookstore - Delhi, NY  

We realize that if someone is not connected to our network via VPN, they would be unable to access that link and those files.

How do we make this possible?

I have tried a custom link and url. I thought I had done this in past admin role but the custom link did not work. Of course, we were in classic then but I also thought we had more than "\\creati01dc01\".
