I ran the preview and noticed the large amount of space on the right side of the screen. My guess is that it is reserved for "console" functions etc. We are force.com users and thus it is just a lage amount of empty space. Is there a way to remove it?

Looking at your screenshot, a good place to start will be to move some of what you have in your related lists over to Lightning Components on the right side empty space when you are working in Lightning App Builder. There is a lot of flexibility, but that might be a good place to start.
