Hello,

I am a new user to Tableau, so please pardon my ignorance of some basic processes/terminologies.

I am working to create a Tableau polygon file from a ArcGIS shapefile. Previously, I've followed directions in the post below to generate functional polygon files in Tableau; however, this time, I think my original shapefile may be too complex to follow these same directions.

http://kb.tableausoftware.com/articles/knowledgebase/tableau-polygons-arcgis-shapefiles

My original shapefile has 7,251 polygons. When I convert these polygons to a point file, I end up with a dbf file that has >4 million records where each record is an xy coordinate for a vertex and another field lists the drawing order. Given excel's ~1,000,000 record limit, I can't convert my dbf to an excel file and connect to this excel file in Tableau.

My solution may be as simple as doing some kind of data extract based on the 4 million record .dbf file associated with my shapefile, but I'm not sure how this would work. Does anyone have any suggestions/instructions for how to make this work?

Thank you in advance,

    There are several tools to convert shape files to a polygon file for Tableau. Usually I use Richard Leeke's shape2tab. It's easier than the Tableau recommended approach, more flexible than the R tool (that is otherwise very nice,and if you're an R person, worth checking out), and cheaper than Alteryx.

    Note that Richard has another utility tabgeohack, which converts a shapefile to the same format used internally by Tableau, which has some advantages you can read about (and a big disadvantage in that it's unsupported).

    Map Utility Downloads

    On shape2tab, you can use the --simplify to reduce the resolution of the shapes in Tableau. On a regional or country-wide scale, you often won't notice the difference in simplified polygons and it'll provide a significant speedup in Tableau.

Hello I I am hoping someone can tell me for the State and Country/Territory Picklists setup configuation where do the State Codes come from? Is there a universal standard list for State Codes or can I just create my own if I want to add State/Provinces for a Country that does not already have one setup in Salesforce?

    FYI:  ISO (International Standards Organization) is a good resource to use. https://www.iso.org/obp/ui/#home   You can look up by country and get a list of all the codes and full names for the provinces/states in a particular country.

I was working on setting up a new org this weekend for a rad community project and came across the question of enabling #State Country Picklist. I referenced the NPSP docs about the limitations and they seemed like reasonable tradeoffs for increased data accuracy, etc. Then, I ran a scan and found a lot of NPSP apex classes that would need to be updated. Is this what the limitations doc is referring to? Should we get @Salesforce Commons & Sprint Events to contribute code to make State Country Picklists a viable thing for the SFDO community? Wondering what @Nonprofit Get Started Hub and @Nonprofit Success Pack peeps think. And @Nonprofit User Group, Philadelphia, US  of course. I will post the scan results in the comments.

I've recently updated my mapping utilities to work with Tableau 8.2 (in the case of "tabgeohack") and to add support for point and polyline shape files as well as polygons (for "shapetotab").

It just occurred to me that the download links for the latest version are buried somewhere in the middle of page 22 of the gigantic Grow your own Filled Maps thread - so it will soon become really hard to find them.

So I've started this thread as a permanent location for downloading the latest versions. Then as and when new versions come out, I'll update this post so it always has links to any relevant versions.

I suggest that we keep this thread just for that and carry on using the original Grow your own Filled Maps thread for questions and support.

Summary of available versions:

Version 2.0.10 of tabgeohack is updated to work with Tableau 9.3 (due to a change in the way Zip Codes are stored). This release also contains a couple of other minor bug fixes and some changes aimed at supporting Mac (not completed).

Version 2.0.6 is still available in case of issues with the changes made for MAc support.

See the release notes (tabgeohack.txt) included with the release for details of what changed with each version.

Use tabgeohack version 1.0.13 for Tableau version 8.1 or earlier.

Version 1.0.11 of shapetotab adds support for the MULTLINESTRING geometry type which occurs in some polyline files.

Version 1.0.10 added an option to filter the contents of the shapefile, at export time.

Version 1.0.9 added support for shape files containing point or polyline features as well as polygons.

There were a few issues getting version 1.0.9 going with later versions of some of the components used, so version 1.0.8 is still available to fall back to if you have problems with the latest version.

The download files with the latest versions of both utilities include installation and usage documentation.

Latest versions:

tabgeohack version 2.0.10 (Dropbox - TabGeoHackV2.zip )

shapetotab version 1.0.11 (Dropbox - ShapeToTab.zip )

Prior Versions:

tabgeohack version 2.0.6 (Dropbox - TabGeoHackV2_v_2_0_6.zip )

tabgeohack version 1.0.13 (Dropbox - TabGeoHack.zip )

shapetotab version 1.0.8 (Dropbox - ShapeToTabV108.zip )

Geospatial Data Abstraction Library:

GDAL 1.9.0 (Dropbox - release-1600-gdal-1-9-0-mapserver-6-0-1.zip )

    Hmmm - not sure why that wouldn't have worked. I downloaded your shapefile, ran the command and it worked for me.

    There's quite a bit of data so it takes a couple of minutes to extract. What spec is your PC?

    C:\Data\Tableau\Filled Maps\Hock\2016 DB Wards>shapetotab WARD2016_GV_Full.shp

    Generated 239 feature rows for WARD2016_GV_Full

    Generated a total of 1126824 points (min: 90, avg: 4714, max: 310164)

    Overall totals: 239 rows, 1126824 points

    Shape file type: Polygon

    Done in 100 seconds.

Error message - Field Integrity Exception: There's a problem with this state, even though it may appear correct. Please select a state from the list of valid states.: State/Province.

Please help me how to resolve this issue.

Hello, I am new to the developer side and I am looking for a way to pull the standard country and state field values into a lightning component. I have read I would need to use a wire adapter, but so far no luck on finding more information about this. I can not use the standard address component as I need it to be translatable, be able to change the labels and make of the values required. Any ideas where I could go to?

Thanks,

Ruth

    There is a knowledge article by Salesforce on "accessing state/country picklists in Apex". Once you have the values in variables, you can use them in lightning component to display to the end-users.

    https://help.salesforce.com/articleView?id=000338321&type=1&mode=1

    for reference

    1. Following is the sample code for accessing all the country codes in the ORG

    Schema.DescribeFieldResult fieldResult = User.Countrycode.getDescribe();

    List<Schema.PicklistEntry> ple = fieldResult.getPicklistValues();

    System.debug('Picklist::'+ple);

    for( Schema.PicklistEntry f : ple){

    System.debug(f.getLabel() +'::'+ f.getValue());

    }

    2. Following is the sample code for accessing all the state codes in the ORG

    Schema.DescribeFieldResult fieldResult = User.statecode.getDescribe();

    List<Schema.PicklistEntry> ple = fieldResult.getPicklistValues();

    System.debug('Picklist::'+ple);

    for( Schema.PicklistEntry f : ple){

    System.debug(f.getLabel() +'::'+ f.getValue());

    }

We have a Custom name for the Household {!{!FirstName}} {!LastName} Household - {!Account.BillingState} . However, when there is a change in the Address (people do move to different states), the name doesn't update. IS there around this, or should we just be updating it manually?

Thanks,

Re: State and Country Picklists Enabled with full name of the state as both the Name and Integration Value.  Does anyone have experiencing changing the Integration Value only, from the full word to the 2-letter code?  We don't likely have any custom code that looks at state, but we do bring data in via API that includes State info.

Hi Everyone,

We consider changing the fields Countr/state to picklist instead of text. As we understand from Salesforce instructions, we should fix the data backward. I want to know if someone had experience with the same process and didn't adjust the data backward? What was the impact? I am also concerned about how much QA did you invest during the migration?

** We have millions of records, So fixing backward can take time.

Thanks,

Omer

Hi All, We are currently working to integrate Demandbase with our Pardot forms and we have run into an issue regarding States.  For some reason, Demandbase only supports the 2 or 3 character ISO code for State/Province and we need to pass the full State name to Salesforce with the Lead.

Does anyone know a way to use Automation or Completion Rules in Pardot to allow us to translate 50 different State codes into the matching Full State Name?  Does Pardot support anything like a lookup table to make this process easier?

Appreciate any thoughts or guidance from the group!

    Hey @Katie Konrath

    yeah I use the 'most recently updated value' as the field setting (I actually use this setting on almost all of the fields that sync between Pardot and SF)

    I think what you would want to do is set up the standard Pardot Prospect Country field to sync with a custom Lead/Contact Country field. Then you would use a couple Process Builder Processes in Salesforce (one for Leads and one for Contacts) that runs whenever the custom Lead/Contact Country field is changed. The Process should launch a field update based on a formula similar to this:

    CASE( [Lead].Custom_Country__c,

    'AD','Andorra',

    'AE','United Arab Emirates',

    'AF','Afghanistan'

    ...etc

    and it should be used to update the standard Lead/Contact Country field.

    A couple things to note:

    1. You could do this through a Workflow Rule rather than Process Builder if you want, however note that if your end goal is to update a picklist field it won't work:

    https://success.salesforce.com/ideaView?id=08730000000Bpd7AAC

    2. You'll likely have to split your Process or Workflow Rule into two sections since the maximum length for a formula in Process Builder is 3900 characters, and in my experience it takes about 5000 characters to list out all the country names.
