Prompt Builder

A group to facilitate discussion with & feedback from customers using the Prompt Builder.

Hi all,

We have enabled Agentforce in our sandbox environment. When attempting to preview a prompt template, we encounter the following error:

“An error occurred during generation. Prompt Engine API failed - Status 404, Response.”

This issue does not occur with the standard templates provided within the org. However, when we create a new prompt template—or copy the instructions from a standard template into a new custom template—we consistently see this error.

When previewing the default standard templates, the response is generated successfully, and we can also see the token usage details.

Has anyone encountered this issue or have insights into what might be causing it?

Prompt Engine API failed - Status 404, Response

    Hi Jagadeesh!

Since the standard prompt templates work but both newly created and copied custom templates return “Prompt Engine API failed - Status 404”, I’d first check the configuration around the custom prompt template rather than the prompt instructions themselves.

    A few things worth verifying:

    • Confirm the custom template is using the correct template type and model/provider configuration.
    • Check that all referenced resources, merge fields, and grounding sources are available in the sandbox.
    • Compare the custom template’s configuration with a working standard template, not just the instructions.
    • Verify the required Prompt Builder/Einstein permissions and feature permissions for the user.
    • Try creating a very simple custom template with no additional grounding or complex resources and test the preview.

Because the standard templates successfully call the Prompt Engine, a consistent 404 on only custom templates could indicate a sandbox feature/provisioning or backend configuration issue rather than an invalid prompt.

If the simple custom template also returns 404, I’d capture the template configuration and the exact timestamp/request details and raise it with Salesforce Support so they can check the Prompt Engine logs for the sandbox.

In Salesforce Prompt Builder (we are using the Flex type to validate and extract data from PDFs/images, and update account record fields like cnic, name etc ), how can we track or monitor the specific credit consumption and costs associated with a single prompt execution?

There isn't a view inside Prompt Builder itself that shows the dollar cost of one specific execution in real time, but Salesforce does provide two official ways to monitor consumption. First, you can turn on Prompt Builder Usage and Feedback Metrics (currently in Beta): in Setup, go to Einstein Audit, Analytics, and Monitoring Setup and enable it. This surfaces invocation counts, latency, and feedback trends per prompt template, which helps you see how often a given Flex template is being called. Second, since Flex-type Prompt Builder executions are billed as generative AI usage (Einstein Requests, converted to Flex Credits per the Agentforce Rate Card), the actual metered consumption and cost accrual for your org is tracked in the Digital Wallet inside the Your Account app. There you will find consumption cards broken out by billable usage type, and you can set up overage alerts so you are notified before exceeding your allotment. The Digital Wallet aggregates usage over a billing period rather than showing a per-transaction receipt, so to correlate a specific extraction call with its consumption, cross-reference the timestamp of that execution against the Einstein Trust Layer audit trail (Setup, then Einstein Trust Layer) alongside the Digital Wallet totals for that day.

Relevant docs: Set Up Prompt Performance Metrics in Prompt Builder (Beta) - https://help.salesforce.com/apex/HTViewHelpDoc?id=prompt_builder_enable_prompt_performance_metrics.htm ; Agentforce and Generative AI Usage and Billing - https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?language=en_US&id=ai.generative_ai_usage.htm&type=5 ; Einstein Requests Billable Usage Types - https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=ai.generative_ai_usage_einstein_requests.htm&language=en_US&type=5

Assumption: I'm assuming your org has metered Einstein/Data Cloud usage enabled (standard for Flex-type Prompt Templates) and that you have admin access to Setup and the Your Account app. If your org instead uses a legacy unmetered Einstein license, Digital Wallet credit tracking may not apply, and the Usage and Feedback Metrics beta would be your main option for relative volume tracking.

I was able to progress on this using below steps :

    1. Under setup go to "Einstein for Sales"  (This is as of today. not sure when they change the name again)

    2.  Turn on " Turn on Sales Emails " and wait for some time. It does something in the backend.

    3. Now go ahead and create the Prompt Template. This time you should see "Sales Email" as the Template type.

    4. Once configured, these will show up and it should resolve the issue :

🎉 New in Prompt Builder — Two Features to Boost Your Workflow!

We're excited to share two new capabilities now available in Prompt Builder. Here's what's new:

⚙️ Deploy Active Prompt Template Versions Only

Take control of your deployments! This new Einstein Setup toggle lets you deploy only the active version of a prompt template to your org — inactive versions are automatically skipped.

  • Keep your target org clean and predictable
  • If a template has no active version, deployment fails fast so you always know exactly what landed
  • Works with CLI and Change Sets deployments

Enable it under Setup → Einstein → Prompt Builder Settings → Deploy Active Prompt Template Versions Only.

Stop reaching for the mouse — your most-used Prompt Builder actions are now just a keystroke away!
