“My job intersects policy, current affairs, technology, and geopolitical conflict. It is the coolest job in the world.
Mahmoud Salem
Director of Client Intelligence Services - Operations & Delivery, Newton International Management, LLC
Austin, TX, United States, and Berlin, Germany
Meet Mahmoud, strategic thinker, and expert crisis manager.
What motivated you to start a career in threat intelligence?
In my previous job, I was responsible for creating an effective strategy and crisis management protocols for the National Mobile operator in Egypt, which was suffering an average of 300 attacks per day: from computational propaganda to phishing to denial of service. Mitigating those risks got me interested in knowing more about the people who were behind the attacks.
How did you end up in your current role?
I learned about threat intelligence from an old friend that has been working in the field since 2006. She is also the person who recruited me for the German Cyber Security Organization (DCSO). Currently I am the Director Of Client Intelligence services - Operations & Delivery at Newton Consultants. I was hired as a Sr. Consultant to conduct due diligence for potential acquisitions of multinational clients in tech and cybersecurity, and was quickly promoted to handle all clients' needs.
“This field is taking over everything: from the services we use to the apps we download to the technology we adopt. There are over a million vacancies in the cyber security sector. We are ridiculously understaffed.
What does your average day as a threat intelligence analyst look like?
Your average day is basically either researching or writing. You start your day checking your sources and feeds, researching your area of expertise, and working with technical threat intelligence and incident response teams.
What role does teamwork play in your day to day responsibilities?
My team handles elements of intelligence analysis, marketing and customer success to provide a holistic approach for client servicing. It only works if experts from at least four fields work as a team on every client, and it's working great now, despite the team being virtual.
What qualities will help someone succeed in a threat intelligence career?
Curiosity, persistence and a deep love for research and writing.
