What is the expected mapping behavior of custom Recurring Donation fields to Opportunities when installment auto-creation is disabled

For example, I want to map a custom 'Acknowledgment Status' field on the Recurring Donation to the 'Acknowledgment Status' field on Opportunities. If NPSP were set to auto-create the next installment, the Recurring Donation's Acknowledgment Status would get mapped to the new Opportunity. However, we have installment auto-creation disabled. So if the next won installment for a Recurring Donation comes in, say, through an online donation platform, would its Acknowledgment Status be inherited from the Recurring Donation:

  • When it's created?
  • In a batch overnight?
  • At all?
  • And would the Recurring Donation's Acknowledgment Status get copied to all child Opportunities, or just new ones after the field is updated?

Thank you for any insight you can provide!

Hello SF community,

I've recently set up Enhanced Recurring Donations in my org, but have a problem with how it's working. When I create a new recurring donation with these specifications:

  • Open
  • Installment plan: every 6 months
  • Established date: 7/1/2024
  • Effective date: 7/1/2024
  • Day of Month: 1

What I expect to see is the first payment opportunity is automatically created starting 7/1/2024, which I would set to closed and paid because I created this recurring donation in response to a new client starting to pay their subscription on 7/1/2024.

However, what I see is the first payment opportunity is automatically created with the date 1/1/2025 (6 months later). I then have to go back and manually change the dates of that to be 7/1/2024, and then it will create the next installment 6 months later as it should.

Is there something in my settings preventing the first installment opportunity from being my established date? I saw in the https://trailhead.salesforce.com/content/learn/modules/donation-management-basics-with-nonprofit-success-pack/create-recurring-donations article in the "Create an open-ended recurring donation" section that the first installment was created in the same month as the donation was established. That should be what I see too, but I don't. Any ideas?

In a sandbox, I deactivated the monthly value from the installment period field picklist to test if a recurring donation could be created without setting a day of the month if monthly were not available as a picklist option.  When NPSP simply required an annual value instead, I reactivated monthly and moved it to the top of the picklist values. However, it does not show on record creation in the picklist values. Even if I set it as default, refresh the screen, and log out and back in it does not show.

How can I get monthly to show in the picklist values again on the record creation page?

Ha @Mahogany Lore, MLIS I deleted my comment accidentally because I thought I put it on the wrong post... was just about to put it back when you replied. Glad you caught it before my oops and it resolved your issue. :-)

In a training org, I tested setting up a second record type on recurring donations for legacy gift opportunity to take advantage of the object linking donations to a sort of master record without giving users yet another feature to work with.  It worked wonderfully. When I created it in our sandbox, however, I could not save without entering an amount > 0 and a day of the month. Neither of these are applicable to a legacy gift opportunity.

The difference I find between my training org and the sandbox is that the training org has not upgraded to enhanced recurring donations. Unfortunately, once upgraded, one cannot downgrade. Also, this sandbox has a great deal of other work accomplished in it, and creating a new sandbox without enhanced recurring donations but with all that work reconfigured (whether through change logs--if possible to use change logs between sandboxes-- or by hand) would be time prohibitive.

Does anyone know of a way to circumvent Enhanced Recurring Donations requirement for an amount and a day of the month? These are not required fields as far as the field settings show, so I think the requirement must be coming from a flow or other feature.  I did not find the requirement in NSPS settings.

Enhanced Recurring Donations: Disable Requirement for Amount & Day of MonthThe field to set the installment period is not included in this page layout, and I did not find an option to set the default.

@Divs Chauhan: Thanks for taking the time to reply!

I found a default on the installment period picklist field and removed that, but the error on the day of month persists.

There is also a trigger on recurring donations, but it is managed by NPSP and seems to disallow admins from changing it.  (Note below that I renamed the recurring donation object to multi-payment gift.)

: Thanks for taking the time to reply! I found a default on the installment period picklist field and removed that, but the error on the day of month persists.

I do not find any validation rules either at the field level or at the object level.

I started following these instructions for disabling managed triggers, but I think I may be missing some information for creating a flow action that disables a trigger. I see a recommendation there for Salesforce Toolkit, but I do not want to risk giving org access to a third party tool.

I am still working this issue at the time of responding. If you have any more pointers, I would appreciate them.

In early 2022, the org I'm consulting for loaded all of their recurring donations into Salesforce, but since then the Last Donation Date (npe03__Last_Payment_Date__c) field has not updated. Both Next Donation Date and Effective Date are working.

Hi,

we don't have ERD, and we want to test before update our ORG to ERD.

Of course we can create a new sandbox and spend one (or more) days doing the update process in the sandbox..

But we don't want to test the updating process at this moment, we want to see ERD working..

Is there any playground or org we can see & test ERD already configured and working?

thanks!

Hello, we've been using NPSP and recurring donations, and faced "unable to obtain exclusive access" errors when we import opportunities from feeding donation information by e-mail (mailservice of salesforce) and custome Apex code related to this.

The number of opportunities we've imported is 100-300, and 5-25 of these are failed with this error.

From this error message, I assume some of apex jobs or trigger flows which is triggerd by this import might lock the records of Account, Contact or RecurringDonation and this made the fail of import.

Does anyone have possible solution for our situation such as changing batch job size or something else?

I don't know this is related to our error directoly but whe I checked Apex job history, following two jobs are created and the number of process are more than 100 when we execute import opportunity.

For everyone commented to this thread, I'd like to share our latest situation

-Improved the logic of two custom flows which is triggerd by creation of opportunity

-Changed the number of  "Next Donation Date Match Range"  from 3 to 1

-> The number of error records are decreased to 2~5 records per day, and no error on yesterday and today, but we're not sure whether these changes are effective or not....

-Raise issue tickets to salesforce support about the logic, whether the rollup batch is triggerd by opportunity creation or not, and we can change the setting of this trigger

    ->Still under communication with support.

Can anyone explain how and when new Pledged Opportunities are created, and how the Next Donation Date Match Range is used in the creation of new pledged opportunities?  And, does anyone know why Salesforce recommends that setting be 3 as the default and nothing higher than 20? I was under the impression that with Enhanced Recurring Donations, only one Pledged Opportunity can exist at a time, and when that one is closed the next one is generated. Depending on the Next Donation Date Match Range, it's either created in the current month, or the next month. Two things are happening in my org that I don't understand:

1) Multiple pledged opportunities exist and it's clear that batch processing creates a new one as soon as the current one is a day past its close date. I thought the only way a new pledged opp is created is when the current one is closed.

2) On 2/28 we closed our pledged donations with close dates between 1/24 and 2/23 (in small batches of 30-40). When we did this, we got error messages for each batch we ran (see below). For almost all of these, the next pledged donation that was created skipped a month. Our Next Donation Date Match Range was set to 28 at the time. I changed that to 27 and during overnight batch processing it created the pledged donations it had skipped for anything with a close date (day of the month) greater or equal to the day I did this (a few days ago). For the ones with days prior to the day I did this, I had to manually create the missing pledged donations. I cannot recreate what happened because it's not possible to back-date recurring donations. I've been doing every kind of test I can think of by changing the Next Donation Date Match Range, but cannot make it skip a month. I need to understand if there's something in my settings that caused this, or if there is a bug of some sort.

The error message we received when closing this batch of donations: Error #1:

Error Type: Job Error

Error Date: 2023-02-28 23:39:56

Message: "There were one more errors updating or inserting the following records:

* 0011R000026HN8IQAW: UNABLE_TO_LOCK_ROW- unable to obtain exclusive access to this record or 33 records:

A donor's credit card failed on a recurring gift installment on 3/8.   We contacted the donor today and they provided a new card number, which we used to updated the recurring donation in Salesforce (changed card number is also reflected in Elevate).  How do we charge the new card today in order to capture this month's installment? #Enhanced Recurring Donations

Hi, does anyone know if it is possible to turn off Recurring Donations Status Automation?

There isn't much in the documentation https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=sfdo.NPSP_Automate_RD_Status.htm&type=5

I'm having issues with it Lapsing and Closing my recurring donations in error and am having to reactivate some of them.

e.g. Monthly recurring donation has a  last donation date  27/02/2023, next donation date 30/03/2023 and it was changed to Lapsed overnight.

I changed the settings to be 400 days to Lapsed and 500 days to Closed yesterday to try and stop it as yesterday they were all Closed.

I'm logging a support case as well, but thought I'd ask in case anyone else has seen similar issues. Thanks.

You can turn it off by blanking the Number of Days for Lapsed and Number of Days for Closed fields in NPSP Settings, have you tried that yet?
