Is there a way to auto-save the standard Lead status field whenever a value is selected in the 'Path section' without clicking on the 'Mark as Current Status' button.

No. You either have the click the button or you have to use the stage field to change the stage. The point of being able to click on other stages in the path without automatically changing the stage is so you can view any guidance for success information or key fields for those other stages.
