Discover the Agentic Enterprise

Learning Objectives

After completing this unit, you’ll be able to:

  • Explain what Salesforce actually does.
  • Describe what it looks like when a business becomes an Agentic Enterprise.
  • Explain how Salesforce brings trusted data, proven business apps, and AI agents together on one platform.

What Does Salesforce Do?

Let’s start with the basics: What does Salesforce actually do? At its core, Salesforce helps you bring together your customer data, your everyday business apps, and AI agents—all in one place, all working together. Think of it this way: your data tells the story of your business, your apps are how that story gets acted on day to day, and now, AI agents can step in and actually do the work, grounded in both.

Since 1999, our mission has been to help companies connect with customers in new ways through leading customer relationship management (CRM) solutions. Now, we’re helping every business become an Agentic Enterprise—an organization where humans and agents work together to drive customer success, all from one trusted foundation that boosts performance and streamlines how work gets done.

Companies are eager to put AI to work, but most AI projects never make it to production. This is often because the data isn’t ready, the infrastructure can’t sustain the model, or leadership scoped the problem wrong from the start. Salesforce is built to solve exactly these problems, so your AI initiatives don’t just launch, they deliver results you can measure. Our research in the State of Agentic AI in the Enterprise report backs this up. Organizations with agents in production reach meaningful ROI in about 8 months, see a 29% lift in customer satisfaction, and 94% of leaders say embedding AI into core workflows delivers more value than running it as a stand-alone tool.

One Architecture, Four Layers

The Salesforce Agentic Enterprise architecture brings together four deeply unified layers, designed to keep every customer at the center and connect every experience with data and AI. With Salesforce, everything your business runs on—your data, models, and workflows—are connected from the start with trust that is built-in, not bolted on.

Diagram of the four-layer Salesforce Agentic Enterprise architecture: AIforce, Agentforce, Customer 360, and Data 360.

The Salesforce architecture includes:

  • AIforce (Live Interface layer): You can bring Salesforce to any interface, with the trusted context, semantics, and workflows that run your business, available in whatever AI you use, wherever you work—like Claude, Coworker, Slack, or Teams.
  • Agentforce (Digital Workforce layer): This allows you to deploy an infinitely scalable workforce that reasons, acts, and improves processes across every corner of your business, 24/7.
  • Customer 360 (Apps, Semantics and Workflow Intelligence layer): Offers proven business logic, workflows, and processes, so every action an agent takes is one your business already trusts.
  • Data 360 (Integration, Federation, and Harmonization layer): This connects your systems, manages your data, and unifies customer context—creating trusted business context for every human and every AI agent.

In short, Salesforce is the #1 AI CRM, helping every business become an Agentic Enterprise, where humans, agents, and platforms drive customer success together.

Why Every Layer Matters

AI models are extraordinary at reasoning, but that reasoning is probabilistic: It’s built to guess what’s likely, the best next step, the best possible answer. Running a business takes something else too: deterministic intelligence, the fixed rules and logic that govern how your business actually operates. An enterprise needs both. The opportunity isn’t choosing one, it’s bringing probabilistic AI and deterministic enterprise intelligence together. So a model can tell you what’s probable while your core systems still decide what’s allowed.

Ask a model what discount will win the deal, and it might say 18% looks competitive, a good guess based on patterns. But your business rules already determine the answer: Your maximum is 15%. That’s the difference between probabilistic and deterministic intelligence, and Salesforce architecture is built to run on both.

Data 360 connects every data source a business has—CRM data, back-office systems, even unstructured content like PDFs and Slack conversations—into one real-time, trusted view, without needing to move the data itself. Better data means better answers. When agents understand context, they move from guessing to knowing.

Customer 360 is where decades of business logic lives—the workflows, permissions, and processes that already run sales, service, marketing, and commerce. This is what stops AI from being generically smart and makes it specifically useful. It already knows how your business works.

Agentforce is the digital workforce layer—where agents are actually built, deployed, and governed. It’s grounded in trust and governance so that agentic systems can move from experiment to live operation safely, with guardrails and audit trails built in from day one.

AIforce is the live interface layer, and it’s what makes the rest of the architecture reachable anywhere. Instead of requiring people to log into a dedicated app, AIforce meets people where they already work.

Skip a layer, and something breaks. Without Data 360, agents act on incomplete information. Without Customer 360, an agent’s answers might sound right but aren’t grounded in how the business actually operates. Without Agentforce, there’s no way to govern an agent as it scales. Without AIforce, work stays confined to a browser. Agents and the tools people already use can’t reach Salesforce from wherever they are. Together, the four layers are what let a business move from experimenting with AI to running on it. We unpack each one over the next four units.
