Terrminal Error when trying to run ./setup script: "Error thrown at runtime by a Listr task"

Had this exact issue. Tried a new org and reinstall of Node.js but that did not work. What resolved it for me was updating Salesforce CLI via terminal command "sf update stable". Was able to rerun the ./setup command in vs code terminal (while connected to the newer dev org) and the script completed with no errors.
