I am working with an org that for some reason has the "other adress" populated for most records instead of the mailing address. How would you best recommend fixing this?

No problem! You totally could use SF reports. Just make sure you have ID's in the reports you export as the data loaders work off the Salesforce ID's. I'd also recommend exporting details (as opposed to printable view) as that will give you a spreadsheet that's a little more 'data loader friendly'
