Solved now.
Following the steps given below of changing the route to ESA helped. It still says that something went wrong but the challenge is completed.
I connected with a salesforce help executive by talking with the salesforce agent which comes on the salesforce help tab. I asked it to connect me with a representative, who helped me solve it on call.

I also had the same issue. Unable to resolve and continue. There seem to be many reports of wasted time rebuilding the agent & even generating a new org only to face the same error.
