Can I tell what page layout I'm using from a validation formula

Question

Hi,

We've had a request from our support manager to only allow people to close a case using the Close Case button and related Close Case page so I'm looking to stop people changing the Status using the dropdown on the main page.

Is it possible to differentiate between the two pages or is there another way of doing this?

Using Record Types and Page Layouts is one way to approach this if the rules are different for different people. If everyone has to use the custom button and Close Case page, then you can add that custom button to the page layout.     If you need to detect the Record Type of a record, use  $ RecordType.Name  in the Validation Rule formula.
