Presumably, when a new Opportunity is opened, there is some plan/strategy that the owner has for getting that Opportunity to Closed/Won.  We're looking at things from the lens of major gift philanthropy in a healthcare setting, so we may know that the donor has an interest in supporting the Oncology department and our strategy might be give a tour of the department, arrange a meeting with the director, share some stories of the impact that past donations have had on the lives of patients, etc.  The same could apply to sales - share a proposal, discuss ways product X will benefit their company, invite to [insert sports event here].

The question is how to record that information - do you just use a long or rich text field and let people go to town?  The Next Step field is great but it's just one step in the process - how can you see the history of steps up until this point and the steps left to go?  Do you use a whole custom object to track the steps along the way?

Just curious if anyone else has solved the issue of getting this information out of their users' heads and onto a record (with the least amount of work for the user), so a manager can then see/review the plans people have in place.
