What is the difference between Topics and Tags? I am finding a lot of old posts that cause more confusion than help. What is the best practice for use in LEX? Thanks.

They essentially perform the same function except topics are more robust. Tags are Classic only, they are not supported in Lightning, so I would focus on using topics to personalize the way records and conversations are associated with each other via common keywords.
