For context, I just updated to Tableau Desktop version 2021.4.2 and tried to access some of the dashboards I worked on prior to updating, but when I sought to open it, I received this error.

The dashboards we use connect to Published Data sources on our Tableau Online site. The dashboards work perfectly fine when using them on the Tableau Online site. The error only arises when I open the dashboards in Tableau Desktop. Prior to updating to version 2021.4.2, I was able to open the dashboards in Tableau Desktop (my old version was 2020.4.1 I believe).

Another odd thing I noticed is that the error has only shown up for me on detailed crosstab reports, and only once I get to around 20 fields or so. In other words, I can be working on a crosstab report which will work fine, but at some point I'll add a field and the view will fail. If I remove the field again, it will begin to work again. Alternatively, if I add a filter that removes a good portion of the rows, the view will work again as well. The crosstab report I'm trying to display has about 12k rows prior to filtering. Views that show visualizations as opposed to a detailed crosstab report appear to work fine.

This leads me to believe that the issue is not simply connecting to the Tableau Online data source, but feeding and displaying view with a large amount of data (like a crosstab report with 12k rows and 20 columns).

Things I have tried:

  • Googling the issue - Most people with this error appear to have an issue with downloadable Tableau Server. We do not download Tableau Server but use Tableau Online.
  • Restarting Tableau/My computer
  • Building the workbook from scratch to see if it fails (it does after 20 columns or so).
  • Signing out and back into Tableau Online from Tableau Desktop
  • Checked user roles/permissions on Tableau online.

Does anybody have any insight as to what might be causing the problem?

Thank you!

Hi there! Not sure if this was resolved, but my company uses Zscaler as well and I've run into the same issue. We found that if you create an extract from a worksheet screen instead of the Data Source pane, the connection doesn't get lost and the extract process completes!
