Why so much amount for the salesforce certifications?

I hear the frustration, certification costs are a real barrier, and you're right that they add up. Here's what's actually available to bring the cost down, verified from current official sources: 

1. Free retake if you fail: Salesforce automatically applies a 50% discount on your retake after a failed attempt. Exam scheduling and retakes are now managed through Trailhead Academy (Trailhead > Certifications), not Webassessor, Salesforce retired Webassessor as of July 21, 2025, and exams now run through Pearson VUE. Log in with your Trailblazer profile and your retake eligibility/discount shows there automatically. 

2. Salesforce Days (Oct 1 - Dec 31, 2026): 50% off certification vouchers for the $150/$200/$400 exam tiers. This is limited to people affiliated with a verified Salesforce Partner (consulting partner, reseller, ISV, MSP, or OSP), worth asking your employer if they qualify. 

3. Trailhead Quests: Salesforce periodically runs Quests that award free certification vouchers as prizes. Check

regularly, new ones rotate in. 

4. Dreamforce / TrailblazerDX / World Tour events: these have historically included free or discounted exam vouchers (especially Associate-level certs) bundled with in-person attendance. 

5. Trailblazer Community Group meetings: local/virtual community meetups sometimes give out certification voucher giveaways. Check

for one near you. 

One accuracy note: if you're researching "PD1," that certification has since been renamed to Salesforce Certified Platform Developer I, search under the current name so you're pulling accurate, current pricing and prep material rather than outdated info under the old nickname. 

On the job-search side: a lack of PD1 alone usually isn't what's blocking hiring. Most entry-level and mid-level Salesforce roles weight hands-on project experience and the Administrator or Platform App Builder cert (both at the cheaper $200 tier) more heavily than PD1 for non-pure-developer roles. If budget is the real constraint right now, building out a strong Trailhead profile with completed superbadges (free) and a portfolio of hands-on projects can carry real weight with recruiters even before you can afford the exam itself.
