Looking to grow my QA career in the Salesforce space, and I’d really value the community’s perspective

Hi Trailblazer! 👋

I’m a QA Tester with around 5 years of experience, mainly focused on manual testing. I also have experience using Salesforce in my current role, particularly when handling support cases and investigating issues.

I’m now interested in building my career as a Salesforce QA Tester, but I’m not quite sure which path would be best to focus on.

For those already working in Salesforce QA, would you recommend starting with the Salesforce Administrator certification, focusing on Salesforce testing and automation, or taking a different path?

I’d really appreciate any advice on certifications, Trailhead modules, or skills that would help someone with a QA background move further into Salesforce.

Hi  @Hazel Joy Tibre https://trailblazers.salesforce.com/profileView?u=005KX0000045AtSYAU     With 5 years of QA experience and some hands-on Salesforce exposure, you already have a great foundation.  I’d recommend starting with Salesforce Administrator certification to build a strong understanding of Objects, Security, Data Management, Flow, Automation, Reports, etc.    Then focus on Salesforce-specific testing—functional, integration/API, security/permissions, Flow/automation, and data testing.  After getting comfortable with the platform, you can move toward test automation and learn SOQL + basic Apex to communicate more effectively with Salesforce developers.  Trailhead + hands-on projects would be my recommendation rather than relying only on certifications.  Your existing QA skills are a big advantage. You’re essentially adding Salesforce domain knowledge to an already strong testing foundation.

Hi Hazel,    Good news: there's a genuine consensus on this from people already in the field, Salesforce Administrator certification first is the right starting point, not a detour.    Why Admin first, even for QA:  Salesforce QA isn't a standalone certification track Salesforce has built out, it's treated as a shared responsibility across Admin, Developer, and Business Analyst skill sets. Practitioners who've built this exact career path (documented by a 15-year QA professional who did this transition) landed on the same conclusion: start with Admin, since it's both a prerequisite for most other certs and gives you the platform fundamentals you need to actually understand what you're testing, objects, permissions, automation, page layouts, not just "click buttons and check results."    Recommended path, in order:    1. Salesforce Administrator Certification: Learn declarative configuration, data model, security, and automation (Flow). This is non-negotiable groundwork, you can't test Salesforce apps well without understanding how they're built.    2. Salesforce Business Analyst Certification (next step after Admin): Since testing requires understanding requirements and the functional lifecycle, not just executing test scripts, this cert strengthens exactly that muscle, and several QA professionals in the space specifically recommend it as step two.    4. Test Automation skills (not a Salesforce cert, but essential for career growth): Since Salesforce doesn't have its own automation certification, build skills in Salesforce-aware automation tools like Provar, Tosca, or Selenium with Salesforce-specific frameworks. Job postings for senior Salesforce QA roles consistently list these alongside Salesforce certs, not instead of them.    Given your 5 years of manual testing experience already, you're not starting from zero, you're adding Salesforce platform fluency on top of testing skills you already have. Admin certification is what converts "I test software" into "I test Salesforce," which is exactly the gap you're trying to close.
