NPSP and Handson Connect both have a contact field named Alternate Email. Both are managed fields so I can't change the label of either to see which is which in a report. Or course, in situations where the API name is visible this isn't an issue.
Is there another way to tell them apart when I can't see the API?
@Rachel Fain - @Terry Cole was on the right track. You can use Translation Workbench to relabel a managed package's label without touching its API name.
Go to Translation Workbench in Setup and instead of "Translate" select "Override." You'll want to keep the language in English.
The trick at this point is to select the correct package. For NPSP, if it's an older field such as "Alternate Email" it's going to be on the Contacts & Organization package rather than "Nonprofit Success Pack." From there, you can select it's a Custom Field and you want to change the Label. You then just have to find the field and type in the new label. Save and that field will appear everywhere in the UI (Field listings, reports, etc).
