sfdx deploy never finishes

Perform Synchronous Compile on Deploy is unchecked

This started happening a few days ago.

When I deploy a single apex class (1 constructor, 1 public method, both empty) it takes anywhere from 3 seconds to 20 seconds deploy.  Most of the time after 30 seconds I cancel the deploy from the Deployment Status screen in salesforce.  Sometimes I have to run the deploy several times before it actually works.  Usually when the deploy is successful it takes less than 3 seconds. 

edit:  I can consistently deploy to sandboxes in other locations within 3 seconds.
