How to make a text, bold and italics in Visualforce template

I have the below code where the text named "INTERACTION DETAILS" should be in bold and Italics. I tried various combination of html tags but nothing worked. Infact the tags directly appeared on the email body.

Can someone help me use the right tag so that text appears in bold and italics.

<messaging:emailTemplate subject="Speaker Alliance  Request Pending Submission  {!relatedTo.name}" 

recipientType="User" 

relatedToType="ahm__Interaction__c">

<messaging:plainTextEmailBody >

Dear Manager,

    Hi hramani,

    You can't have HTML tags or formatting in between 

     

    <messaging:plainTextEmailBody>
    </messaging:plainTextEmailBody>

    tags... indeed, you can only have plain text, and any tags will be rendered - as you said - as HTML in the body.

    Depending on your requirements you could simply replace these with

     

    <messaging:htmlEmailBody>
    </messaging:htmlEmailBody>

    tags instead? Then your regular HTML will work as you wish.
