How to make a field editable for a specific role if the field is read-only in the page layout?

You can try the followings
- Uncheck the checkbox Read Only on page layout
- In profile give Edit permission and keep uncheck the checkbox
- Create permission set and mark read only fields
- Assign the permission set to user
- Test it.
