problem with NPSP data import template on import

I just imported a small batch of contacts using the NPSP data import template, and tried for the first time to assign a contact to a campaign.

I created the campaign in my salesforce org, and then listed that exact campaign name in the template under the column "Campaign name" - from what I understand, it should create the affiliation within my org OR create a new campaign if that campaign wasn't found. Neither happened. The new batch of contacts weren't connected to the campaign I created, and a new campaign was not formed. Advice?
