Salesforce Marketing Cloud Mobile Connect sending messages with external carrier

Hi I am new to Mobile connect. The customer asks us to rate sending messages from outside Salesforce with another cheaper SMS provider. What are the implications of using an external provider for sending text messages ? How would this impact to Marketing Cloud Platform and the tracking of the SMS sents?
