Sooo frustrated!!! Help with If statement in a Mail Merge

I have tried probably 100 combinations of IF statement Mail Merge ideas I have found on the net and SalesForce help topics.  I have Word 2010 and I am looking to do a mailmerge from the Opportunities area.  I need to be able to reference a standard field and if it is null then it not to return the underscores and just leave it blank.  Can anyone email me a file of a working If statement for this purpose?  I would be eternally grateful!

    The merge would be started from the opportunity page.  Right now, I can reference the field Contact_email and it will generate the email address in the mail merge.  Currently, if no email address is entered in that field it will return the result of 8 underscores.  This result is not acceptable on the finished mail merge doc so I was hoping there was a way to modify what I either saying the mail merge field itself or by creating a rule like you are talking about so that the end result would be what I am looking for.  Is that not possible?
