I'm looking for some advice :) We're starting to explore using a Customer Community for our customers to access files. We'd like to stray away from purchasing any community licenses, so debating using the Chatter Free licenses for the customers to access the community. Our concerns our file access and data security. We would need these customers to only access the files posted to their Private Chatter Group. Unsure at the moment if this is even feasible, so would love to hear any similar past experiences or suggestions on a workaround.

Unfortunately, we can't use chatter free licenses to access community. Please check this article for available licenses for community:
