I set-up an workflow email alert.
Idea is that if an opportunity has a close date in the past, 1 day later the owner receives a notificiation. I'd like to keep sending this notification every day until its fixed. meaning opportunity date is no longer in the past or the opportunity was set to closed lost. how can I add this?

There is no shame in creating custom fields - they're how you save information, and this is a database after all.
You could try and see if you have any other date field on the opportunity you could cannibalise for this purpose, but you will need *a* field.
