I am trying to run a report that will filter out active clients as well as any open opportunities tied to an account (besides closed-lost). Please advise. Thanks!

Which editon of SFDC are you using?  If you're on EE or above you can use a Report Cross-Filter =>

    https://help.salesforce.com/HTViewHelpDoc?id=reports_cross_filters.htm&language=en_US (https://help.salesforce.com/HTViewHelpDoc?id=reports_cross_filters.htm&language=en_US)

Or if you're on PE or above you could create a Custom Report Type and select Accounts "with or without" related Opportunties =>

    https://help.salesforce.com/HTViewHelpDoc?id=reports_defining_report_types.htm&language=en_US (https://help.salesforce.com/HTViewHelpDoc?id=reports_defining_report_types.htm&language=en_US)

Or if those aren't available you could create a custom Roll-Up Summary field on the Account that counts the number of Open, Won, Closed, opportunites and use that in your Report Filter =>

    https://help.salesforce.com/HTViewHelpDoc?id=fields_about_roll_up_summary_fields.htm&language=en_US (https://help.salesforce.com/HTViewHelpDoc?id=fields_about_roll_up_summary_fields.htm&language=en_US)

Needless to say "you've got options"
