Hi Peter,
I am afraid Person Account does not come with Group Edition. Person Account is available in Enterprise and Unlimited editions.
If you do not want to switch over either of these, you can create a "Person/Individual" account and attach the contacts to this Account. Also, you can customize Out-of-Box Account object as per the needs of the organization and implement the system without using Person Accounts.
May I know, which are the major use-cases/requirements for your business?
