I'm using SF as a student contact database for a charter school, and I will need to create contacts for students, parents, guardians, and be able to generate reports for each contact type.
I'm not sure whether to put Contacts into Households, and then assign relationships between household members, or
Use Organization to group family members using "Affilated Members". If I do this then I can use the Role field under Affiliation Information to freeform enter "mother" "father" "aunt" "child" or whatever.

To locate the object "Relationships" go to your name>Setup>App Setup>Create>Objects and locate the "Relationships" object and click its link. You will see a section for fields where you should be able to access the picklist field in question and add new values etc.
