Hi,

I worked for a non-profit that does job training with system involved youth. We have various aspects of our model that people get interested in --- the business side, our youth development side, our alumni group, volunteering, etc. We were wondering how to best track people's interests when we meet them --- say five people come donate $ and are really interested in the work of our alumni base. What is the best way to label them in SF so that we don't lose that information about them.

Would it be creating a campaign based on our different interests group?

Would it be creating a custom tab in our contacts section where they could be labeled accordingly (i.e. volunteer, etc.)?

Any information would be much appreciated...

Thanks,

Bobby

    Hey Bobby,

If you'd simply like to track their main interest, a picklist field should do just fine (very easy to manage and report on).  If you want to track multiple interests, a multi-select picklist would be the next easiest to manage.

You can also do as you said and create a campaign for each interest and then add contacts to those campaigns as they specify their interests.  This would allow you to easily email those lists and add people to more than one list.

The final (and probably most complex) solution would be to build an "Interests" object that would have a many-to-many relationship with Contacts.  This would allow complete control over what the Interests are and how many Contacts you have connected to each Interest.  Building a Custom Report Type would allow you to report on this relationship and build distinct lists as well.

In my opinion, it sounds like the picklist may be the way to go, due to its ease of use while maintaining a nice level of reporting :)
